Acrobat has a built-in way to create links from email addresses, but the links are all the same and can't be customized in any way.
Using this script you can create email links that change their color when you hover above them with the mouse (from black to blue), and can even be customized to create an email with a certain subject line, CC or BCC addresses, and even the email message body itself.

Acrobat -- Extract Groups of Pages

Using this tool you can extract repeating groups of pages from your PDF files.
All you have to do is enter the number of pages per new file, and optionally range of pages to process in the original document (the default values are the first and last pages), and the script will take care of the rest.
The new files will be saved in the same folder as the original one.

Acrobat -- Batch Combine All Files in a Folder

This is a new batch tool, so it can only be used in Acrobat Pro or Extended.
With this tool you can combine all of the files in a folder to a single file (in order!) and have this file saved into the same folder (using the folder's name as the new file name).
New feature: You can now select to automatically create a bookmark pointing to each file in the merged document.
ANOTHER new feature: Now you can also select to create a single, "master" file at the end of the process, which contains all of the processed files, including a bookmark for each folder and file.

So if you have the following folder structure:

- \Root
- 1.pdf
- 2.pdf
- 3.pdf
- \SubFolder1
-- 4.pdf
-- 5.pdf
- \SubFolder2
-- \SubFolder3
--- 6.pdf
--- 7.pdf
-- 8.pdf
-- 9.pdf

The script will create 3 combined PDF files: files 1 to 3 will be saved as Root.pdf in the root folder; files 4 to 5 will be saved as SubFolder1.pdf in SubFolder1; files 6 to 7 will be saved as SubFolder3.pdf in SubFolder3; and files 8 to 9 will be saved as SubFolder2.pdf in SubFolder2.

Here's another example:
We have a folder called "Placeholder 3" under C:\Temp\Forms\.

We run the batch on "C:\Temp\Forms" and select to create a bookmark for each file (excluding the ".pdf" extension).

The result is a single file, called "Placeholder 3.pdf".

This file is the result of all the single files in that folder, including the bookmarks we wanted to create.

After the individual files have been combined, you can create the "master" file:

Acrobat -- Apply Automatic Date Calculation

One of the most common tasks when working with date fields is to automatically apply a certain data calculation to a field. For example, you want to have a field with today's date, and then one that automatically shows 4 days after from that date, or 2 weeks or a month, or something similar. This is usually quite complex and time consuming to implement, but no longer...

Using this new tool I've created you can easily select your initial field, the amount of time to add (or subtract!) from it, the target field, the date format to use, and you can even specify to the script to ignore weekends (Saturday and Sunday) or to specify a list of holidays to ignore (this can be useful when calculating working days, for example).

Here's how the tool looks like in Acrobat:

In this case, the result is that the field called "Text3" will automatically have the date of "Text2", plus 5 weeks, unless that date falls on a weekend or one of of the holidays specified in the list. In that case it will be the first following day after that.

Many applications offer the option to save your current workspace as a session and to restore it later. Let's say you're working on a project and have multiple documents open and you want to move to a different project, or just need to close the application. You save your workspace and later on you restore it and continue working from the spot you've left it off.

Unfortunately, Acrobat does not offer this functionality, until you install this script...

With this tool you can maintain an unlimited amount of sessions, which will remain even when the application is closed or the computer is restarted. The session contains all of the currently opened files, and the exact location where you left them off.

Acrobat -- Validate Fields Before Printing or Saving

If you have a form that contain a set of required fields, they are only useful when the user wants to submit the form back to you. But what if you want to use the required feature of these fields when the form is printed as well? Or when the user tries to save it? Until now you couldn't, but with this script it becomes possible.

After running this script on a file, if someone tries to print it without filling in all the required fields, they will receive an error message and the form will print without any of the data in it. The same can be done when the file is saved.

For example, here's a standard form with some required fields:

When the user tries to print the form without filling in all the required fields, they receive this message:

The printed form is blank, but the data they already filled-in is not lost! They can continue editing the form, and when all the fields are filled-in properly, the form will print as usual.

Acrobat -- Connect PDF to a Database

I've recently developed a set that allows you to connect your PDF to a local or networked database.
It's possible to copy highlighted text, bookmarks, form field values, etc. from your PDF directly into a database table, such as Access databases. It's even possible to access the database from your file and populate fields or create bookmarks based on data read from it. The possibilities are endless.

It contains a sample database and a PDF that reads the data off of this database and uses it to populate the form fields in it. The full set of tools is, of course, able to both read and write data off the database.

Acrobat -- Batch Edit URL Links

This powerful little tool allows you to edit all the links in a PDF based on a simple search and replace command, and it can be used to process an entire folder (and all of its sub-folders) in a single go.

How it looks like:

Imagine the following situation:
You have a set of PDF files which point to your website:
"Welcome" links to http://www.mysite.com/welcome.html
"Intro page" links to http://www.mysite.com/intro.html
"Next" links to http://www.mysite.com/page1.html
etc.
But then you decide to change your domain name to http://www.mynewsite.org and now you need to update all of your PDF files!

Well, this tool will do that for you. You just specify the folder to run it on, the Search & Replace action, the text to match ("mysite.com") and the text to replace it with ("mynewsite.org"), and voila! All of your files are updated in a second, and you get a detailed log of all the changes made to them.

This tool can also append text to the beginning or end of your URL links, so if you want to add a new URL parameter to the end of all of your links, you can easily do so.

This tool does not require you to actually have Acrobat. All you need is to have Java installed on your computer.

Acrobat -- Filter Comments By Color

For some reason, Adobe has dropped the option to filter the comments list according to the color of the comment in version X of Acrobat. So I decided to jump to the rescue of those who depended on this feature, or just found it useful, and created a script which allows you to do it once again.
You can select the color you want to filter from a list of pre-defined colors, or just click on a comment with the color you want to use and then select the last option in the list: "Selected Comment Color". The script will then identify this color and will only present comments with the same color.

Here's how it works:
1. Select the comment color you want to see from the list

2. Now only the comments with this color are visible (even in the built-in Comments List!)

3. We remove one of the comments, and now we want to restore the comments we've hidden...

4. We're back to the original situation, with our edits in tact.

It's as simple as that...

New Scripts Location for Acrobat 10.1.1

To all of my customers (and everyone else who encounters this issue):
If you've installed scripts into the user-context folder of Acrobat X, which are:
On Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\10.0\JavaScripts

On Vista or Windows 7:

C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\10.0\JavaScripts

And then updated to Acrobat 10.1.1, these scripts will no longer work, due to a change in Acrobat's folder structure.

To resolve this issue, move the scripts to the following folder:
On Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\Privileged\10.0\JavaScripts

On Vista or Windows 7:

C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\Privileged\10.0\JavaScripts

If this folder doesn't exist, you can either create it yourself, or place the script in this folder instead:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\Acrobat\JavaScripts

C:\Program Files(x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\Acrobat\JavaScripts

Each of these dictionaries can be customized: Words can be added and removed from it, either using a simple input dialog or through a file (which allows adding or removing multiple words in one go).

When you run spell-check a document, the misspelled words are underlined and the suggestions for the correct spelling are added to the highlight:

Update: Added functionality to check just a part of the document. This is ideal if you have a single document consisting of multiple languages. You simply add "Spell Checking Zones" to your document, and only the words within those zones will be checked.

Acrobat -- Create Popup Images

This script will make your standard PDF file much more dynamic and interactive.
It allows you to insert "popup" images that appear whenever the user clicks a certain phrase, or even just hovers with the mouse above it! The image disappears when the mouse is clicked again, or moved away, respectively.

For example, let's say you have some figures in your file. Instead of linking to them on a different page, why not have the appropriate figure pop up whenever the user moves the mouse above the words "figure 1", "figure 2", etc.
The same can be done with products, people's names, tables, screenshots of websites, or whatever... Even pages from another PDF!

How it works:
1. You create a plain-text file (semi-colon delimited) that specifies the phrases and the image to associate with them. For example, it can be:

Figure 1;C:\My Images\Figure1.jpg
Figure 2;C:\My Images\Figure2.gif
Figure 3;C:\My Images\Figure3.png
Figure 4;C:\My Images\Figure4.jpg

2. You then select the properties of the links that display the images (border width, style and color, among other things), in this dialog:

3. The images and links are then automatically added to the file.
If you choose to do so, a check-box will be added to the top left corner of the first page which will prevent the images from popping up, unless checked.
Also, if you choose that option, a report will be presented at the end, specifying how many images were added, and to which pages.

Acrobat -- Batch Combine Even-Odd Pages

This script is similar to my original script for interleaving two PDF files (see: http://try67.blogspot.com/2008/12/acrobat-combine-even-odd-pages.html), but it works as a batch process and can combine entire folders at the same time.

Basically, you select the folder that contains the odd pages (1, 3, 5, etc.) and the one containing the even pages (2, 4, 6, etc.) and then the output folder, and the script will interleave all files with the same name in both folder and will save the combined file in the output folder.

Convert JavaScript Links To Real Web-links (FREEBIE)

Using the free tool you can convert links with a JavaScript action to launch a web-site (using the app.launchURL()-method) to "real" web-links that point to the same URL.
This can be handy because JavaScript code in Acrobat can not create this type of links, only links with JS-code.

Acrobat -- Mail Merge and Email

Another new and powerful tool to make your PDF experience easier and more efficient.
This time, it's a PDF mail-merging tool. "Mail merging" is the production of multiple (and potentially large numbers of) documents from a single template form and a structured data source (Wikipedia). In this case the template is a PDF file with form fields and a plain-text or CSV file (which can be easily exported from an Excel spreadsheet).
The tool even offers the option to automatically email the merged files to the recipients (see below)!

How the tool works?
You start by setting up your input file and the empty PDF form (notice the column headers match the field names in the PDF):

You then execute the script, select the input file and enter the pattern for the file names. You can select between a generic name and one using the actual data from the file:

The merged files are then created and saved in the same folder as the original:

If you have chosen the option to automatically email the files, you will be presented with this dialog:

After entering the different settings, a customized email will be created for each recipient, with the filled-in form as an attachment:

Acrobat -- Batch Watermark A File

With this new and powerful tool one can create multiple copies of the same file, each one watermarked with the text of your choice from a list.

For example, let's say you want to distribute a movie script to multiple people, and want to stamp each copy with the name of the recipient, to prevent the script from being leaked. You create a list of all the people in the production team, like so:

You then open your script and run the tool from the Tools menu.
You select your list and set the properties of the watermark text:

As you can see, you can set various options regarding the location and style of the text, as well as which pages to watermark and under which name to save the watermarked files.
The tool will proceed to create watermarked copies of the file, one for each item in the input file.

Later on, the files can be secured using a batch process to ensure that the watermarked texts can not be edited.

PDF files have various Open Parameter options: you can link to a PDF at a specific page, named destination, zoom level, etc. You can even use a FDF file to populate form data, but this requires having such a file available on your server. It's easier to just do it directly from the URL, which is where this script comes into play.

With this new script created by me you can create a hyperlink to a PDF file, which will also populate it with some pre-defined values, using a simple URL parameter, like so:

http://www.myserver.com/files/products.pdf?rawdata=firstname:John;lastname:Smith

When the reader opens the file in their browser using this link, the form fields ("firstname" and "lastname", in this case) will automatically be populated with the data in the URL ("John" and "Smith", resp.).

Using the batch version of this script you can apply the code to multiple files in the same process (if you have Acrobat Pro, of course).

Acrobat -- Copy & Paste Field to Multiple Pages

Acrobat has a built-in command to duplicate a single field to multiple pages, but the catch is that all of the duplicated fields are exact copies of one another, so with the same name and value. If you want unique fields, you must rename them manually afterwards (or use this tool: http://try67.blogspot.com/2010/10/acrobat-convert-duplicated-fields-to.html)

An easier way to do it is by using this script, which lets you select a field, enter the page range to which to duplicate it, and then continues to make unique copies of the fields, so no renaming is necessary!

For example:

When you press OK, unique copies of the field "Text1" will be made on pages 2 to 15.

Reader -- Print Sticky Notes

One of the small annoyances of Reader is that you can't print the contents of Sticky Notes together with other markups and comments, it just prints the sticky note icon instead, which isn't very helpful...
So I created this script that allows you to print the contents of your stickies together with your file. The only draw-back is that the file must have the Extended Reader Rights to manipulate comments for it to work.

Acrobat -- Link to a Specific Bookmark in a PDF

PDF files have various Open Parameter options: you can link to a PDF at a specific page, named destination, zoom level, etc. But what you can't do is link to a specific bookmark. Well, until now...

With this new script created by me you can create a hyperlink to a specific bookmark in your PDF, using a simple URL parameter, like so:

http://www.myserver.com/files/products.pdf?bookmark=Index of all products

When the reader opens the file in their browser using this link, they will automatically jump to the specified bookmark, while still being able to browse the rest of the file, as usual.

Using the batch version of this script you can apply the code to multiple files in the same process (if you have Acrobat Pro, of course).

This script will highlight (and add a comment to) all instances of a specific word, partial word or phrase. Merge PDF Files in True Numeric Order

When you combine PDF files in Acrobat to a single file, the file order is alphabetical by default. So if you want to merge these files:
1.pdf
2.pdf
(...)
9.pdf
10.pdf
11.pdf

Acrobat will sort them like this:
1.pdf
10.pdf
11.pdf
2.pdf
9.pdf
(...)

This is obviously wrong, and the only way to fix it is to re-order them manually, which is tedious at best and can be a real problem if you have hundreds of files.

That's why I created this tool to merge PDF files according to their true numeric order. My tool will add the files in this order:
1.pdf
2.pdf
(...)
9.pdf
10.pdf
11.pdf
And if there are any files with non-numeric names (like index.pdf), you can choose whether to append them at the beginning or the end of the file.

Here's how the application looks:

NOTE: This application does NOT require you to have Acrobat or even Reader, and it will run on both Windows and Macintosh computers.
You do need to have Java installed, though.

Acrobat -- Calculate Time Differences in a Worksheet

In many timesheet-style PDF files you want to have a calculation of the time difference between a starting hour and an ending one. Something like when a worker checks in and then out. With this script you can automatically create the script to calculate that difference. There's also an option to sum up all times to a final piece.

New feature: This script can now also be used to total an entire column of time expressions to a single result field.

Note: I have also created a version of this tool for redacting Canadian Social Insurance Numbers (SIN), which can be purchased here, as well as a version that redacts British National Insurance Numbers (NI or NINO), which can be purchased here.

Social Security Numbers are sensitive information that should often be removed permanently from PDF files.
The only secure way of doing that is with the Redaction tool, which has an option for selecting SSN's. However, this option can't be used in a batch process, so if you want to apply this to multiple files you will need to do them one by one.

With this tool you can easily remove SSN's from multiple files with a single click, using a Batch Process (aka Action, in Acrobat X).
It offers a choice between just marking the suspected SSN's (to be reviewed manually and applied later) or marking AND deleting them at the same time.

As an extra bonus, it comes will a handy menu item to Search and Redact SSN's with a single click, not having to go through Acrobat's built-in menus, which can come in handy if you do it often.
You can use these menu items even in Acrobat Standard, where batch processing is not possible.

The script will redact the following patterns:

999999999
999 99 9999
999-99-9999 (or with any other punctuation marks)

A PDF with several SSN's in it (the text was taken from the Wikipedia page about Social Security Numbers).

The script can be run in a "Mark and Ask" mode, in which the user is prompted whether or not to apply the redactions.

Acrobat -- Batch Rename PDF Files Based on Content or Metadata

Using this script you can batch rename (if you have Acrobat Pro, of course) a bunch of PDF files based on their content or metadata.

You can use the following parameters in it:

Original file name
Title
Author
Subject
Keywords
Number of pages

When you run the batch process for the first time, you will need to enter the pattern to use for the new file name. It looks like this:

Then you run the batch process (or Action, as it's called in Acrobat X) on your files, and they will all be automatically re-saved using the pattern you specified.
A menu item allows you to reset the pattern, in case you want to use a different one.

Acrobat -- Extract Non-Sequential Pages

With this script you can extract a non-sequential range of pages in a PDF with ease.
Once launched from the Tools menu (or panel), the script will prompt you to enter the page ranges to extract, separated by comma's.

You can use single page number: 1, 2, 3
or page ranges: 1-3, 4-20
or an open-ended range: 25-
or a combination of all of the above.

The order in which you enter these ranges is not important.

For example, if you enter: 1, 4, 20-25, 16, 29-
The script will extract pages: 1, 4, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 29 to the end of the file.

Once the script is done you can choose to delete the extracted pages from the original file, if you wish.

Acrobat -- Retroactively Copy Highlighted Text into Comments

One of the most important settings in Acrobat is "Copy selected text into Highlight, Cross-Out, and Underline comment pop ups" (to be found under Edit - Preferences - Commenting). Sadly, it's not checked by default (see screenshot below).
As a result, if you make highlights to your file, the text you highlight is not copied into the comment itself, which can be very useful when creating summaries. And when you realize this and switch this setting on, it's too late. Acrobat won't change your existing comments, only your new ones.

This is why I developed this script to retroactively insert the highlighted text into existing comments in all of your pre-existing files.
In case you manually entered some text into the comment, don't worry! The script will not remove your text, just add to it (see example #2).

Note: The script can only recognize full words. If you highlighted just a part of a word, it will not be picked up.

Merge PDF Files via Command Line

This is a stand-alone utility for merging PDF files via a command-line.
Using is is very simple. All you have to do is run the following:
PDFMerger inputfiles outputfile
and the tool will combine your input files (in order) and create the output file.

For example, running:

PDFMerger c:\temp\10000001.pdf c:\temp\10000002.pdf c:\temp\combined.pdf

will combine 10000001.pdf and 10000002.pdf into a new file called combined.pdf.

Acrobat -- Batch Search Files

This batch script will allow you to process an entire folder of files for a certain term, and then perform an action on them in case the term was found.
The actions available at the moment are:

Copy to a folder: Specify an output folder to which all the files with a match will be copied.
Create a PDF summary of the file paths: At the end of the batch a new PDF file will be created, containing the paths of the matching files.
Print file paths to the console: Will print the paths of the matching files to the built-in console of Acroabt.
Print entire file: Will send each matching file to the printer.
Print matching pages: Will print only the actual pages in the matching files where the match was found.
Print matching pages with highlights: Same as above, but will also highlight the matches on the actual pages.

Acrobat/Reader -- Folder Locations (FREEBIE)

This is just a handy little tool that I am giving away for free.
It can be used to display the different types of internal folders Acrobat uses for things such as javascripts, batch sequences, stamps, temporary files, etc.

How to use this script:
-Open the file.
-Select All. Copy.
-Open Acrobat. Open a PDF file (this is necessary due to a bug in Acrobat/Reader).
-Open the JavaScript Console (Ctrl+J or Cmd+J).
-Select all the text in the window and paste the contents from the file over it.
-Select all the text you just pasted and press Ctrl+Enter (or Cmd+Enter).
You will see this menu:

-Select the folder you wish to find.
You will see this dialog:

You can now copy the path from the dialog to an explorer window (or through the Run... command) to open it directly.

Acrobat's built-in dialog for setting the Field Calculation Order can be a real hassle. The only options in it are to move a field up or down the list, so if you have a document with a lot of fields that needs to be ordered properly, it can take ages.

That's why I developed this tool to automatically set the field calculation order of all the fields in a document with a single click. You can choose from the following options:

Set calculation order by rows (top to bottom, left to right)
Set calculation order by columns (left to right, top to bottom)

Imagine that you scanned an article and all the pages have extra white-space on them. How do you get rid of it?
Sometimes you want to remove the white space from both sides of the page; or just from the left size of the odd pages (1, 3, 5, etc.) and the right side of the even pages (2, 4, 6, etc.); or the other way around.
With this script you can do all of that with a single click. You just run the script from the Tools menu, enter how many inches to crop, and the rest is done for you!

Reader -- Create Comments Summary

As we all know, Adobe Reader is more limited in functionality than Adobe Acrobat (makes sense, since it's a free product), but sometimes you want to achieve certain things in Reader that are also possible in Acrobat, like creating a summary of the comments in your file.

In the past I have created scripts that create PDF or Plain Text comment summaries for Acrobat (See: http://try67.blogspot.com/2008/11/acrobat-create-comments-summary-txt-pdf.html), and now comes the Reader version.
Because it's not possible to generate PDF files in Reader, or to create TXT files (unless you have a special right applied to your file), I've chosen a different path.
This script will create the comment summary and then present it in a new window, inside a text box, which you can then copy & paste into Word, Notepad or any other application. It looks something like this:

Important:
The script will only work on files with the Commenting in Reader right extended.
And yes, the comments summary it creates includes sticky notes!

Acrobat -- Extract Pages with Proper Sequential Names

Acrobat -- Rename Duplicate Fields to Unique Fields

When you use the built-in Duplicate Field command in Acrobat, or even when you just copy & paste a field in your PDF file, the result is a copy of the original, meaning that any changes made to any of the copies will also occur in all of the other ones. This can be useful, but sometimes you want each field to function on its own.
Until now you had to manually rename your duplicated fields in order to achieve this, but this script will do that automatically for you.

Important: When you use this script the renamed fields lost all format/validation/calculation settings that are attached to them.

Acrobat -- Convert Form Fields Type

The Acrobat Form Wizard can sometimes make mistakes while identifying your form fields, or sometimes you create a form and then want to change some text fields to buttons, for example. Until now you had to it manually, which can take a lot of time.
With this script you can automatically convert all form fields of a certain type to another type, in the entire document or on a specific page. It's also possible to match a certain field name.

A free demo version of this script is available here.
This version will only convert text fields on the first page to check-boxes. Purchase the full version and be able to convert all field types on all pages!

Reader -- Run JavaScript Code from within Reader

As developers of scripts for Acrobat and Reader know, the JavaScript console in Reader is a very handy tool. You can use it to execute your code directly from within the application, and it displays any errors that occur while you run it.
Unfortunately, in Reader the console is very limited. You can't enter or execute code in it. In fact, you can't even display it at will (Ctrl+J doesn't work like in Acrobat).
Well, I've developed a tool that enhances and extends the JavaScript Console in Reader, allowing you to run code, and it even displays any error messages, if any, in the original console.
It also comes with a menu item to display the console window.

Sometime you need to create many form fields, but doing so using the built-in tools of Acrobat can be a pain. You need to create each one by hand, or copy-paste and then rename them, and then align them, make sure they have similar names and properties, etc. This script is meant to offer a solution to this annoying problem.

You just need to create the first two fields, like so:

Then you run the script, enter the "base name" of the fields you've created ("PN" in this case):

Followed by the number of fields you want to create:

And the script will generate those fields for you, with proper names, alignment, properties, etc.

The script will automatically detect whether the fields should be placed in the same column or the same row as the ones you've created. A real time saver!
